A WEEKEND OF VEGAN EATS (& WINE): TRAVERSE CITY

A Weekend of Vegan Eats Traverse City, plant based detroit.
The view at Bonobo Winery.

This past weekend some girlfriends and I headed north for a weekend getaway at my family's cabin outside of Traverse City. Usually I only visit during the winter months for skiing and snowmobiling, but there is so much to do in Northern Michigan in the summer, we decided to plan a weekend trip!

Of course, during any trip, I always plan ahead and look for places that are vegan friendly. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there are plenty of plant based options in the TC area, that made spending time out and about during the weekend quite easy.

Some of you were also generous enough to offer suggestions of places, some of which we were able to check out, others will go on the agenda for next time! I've shared in detail the places we were able to check out, but will also list everything I found with vegan options below in hopes that you'll have lots of options for you next visit to the Traverse area!

After conquering the drive north on Friday afternoon, we got settled into the cabin, freshened up and headed in to Traverse City for dinner. We decided on Mama Lu's for tacos, as a few followers had recommended it to me on Instagram. We were not disappointed! Mama Lu's has a small menu, but does offer a variety of vegan/veganizable options. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable. It made me feel more comfortable and less like a hassle when she made it clear I wasn't the first vegan the kitchen had accommodated!

My friends and I shared the chips salsa and guac, along with a side of the rice and beans. We all agreed they were delicious. I also had 2 of their 'vegetal' taco options minus the cheese, which were sort of like a mexican falafel, as well as their salad with citrus vinaigrette instead of the green goddess which contained dairy. Both were awesome! I loved all the fresh veg in the salad, along with the savory indulgent goodness of the tacos. All this food paired with a cold Pacifico (vegan friendly) we were stuffed!

After dinner we walked down the block to Taproot Cider House to grab a drink. A few people had recommended Taproot for dinner as well. We were too full from dinner to have more than a drink, but their menu definitely caters to vegans, equally if not more than it does to omnivores. I would definitely suggest checking it out if you're in town, and go hungry - I know I will next time!

Before heading home, we popped in to Milk and Honey for a sweet treat (I mean, there is always room for dessert!). I knew Milk and Honey had vegan options, but was pleasantly surprised to find they had just unveiled a new vegan menu, with lots of yummy mix in options!

I decided on a waffle cone with one scoop of vanilla, one scoop of chocolate and another of matcha! All of them were equally creamy and yummy, I would definitely go back again! It was the awesome close to a super delicious evening!

Because our cabin is a good 40 minutes outside of town, and miss Bug was with us on the trip, we opted to make our breakfasts at home. Saturday morning we whipped up some Birchbenders chocolate chip pancakes. The mix is organic, vegan, and all you have to add is water! The bag was enough to make 9 large pancakes, which generously served three of us (but they were all finished).

After breakfast we took Bug for a hike in the trails around the cabin, and then got ready to head to Old Mission Peninsula for the day!  The property around our place is so beautiful and lush this time of year, it was the perfect way to work off some of those pancake calories!

If you're not super familiar with the Traverse Area, you might not know about OMP, but that ends here! The Pure Michigan site sums it up pretty perfectly: "Just north of Traverse City, the Old Mission Peninsula is a narrow finger of land extending into the center of Grand Traverse Bay. It’s 22 miles long and in some places as little as a mile wide: a beautiful patchwork of orchards, vineyards, forests and villages."

My group in particular was interested in visiting the different wineries on the peninsula. Luckily (as you might have noticed above) quite a few of them make vegan friendly wine! First we checked out Bowers Harbor (an old favorite) for a wine tasting and stroll around their lovely property. Coincidentally it was National Rose Day and bottles were $5 off, so of course a few came home with us!

Next we checked out Harbor View Lavender Farm. Although the lavender doesn't bloom until July, it was still a beautiful spot to check out, and purchase some of their products (soaps, lotions, linen spray etc.).

Jolly Pumpkin was next on the agenda for a late lunch. Their menu doesn't have much by way of vegan/vegetarian options, but they do have a falafel salad and falafel burger that can be made vegan. While I do appreciate having at least a couple of options, once veganized the food wasn't much to write home about - next time I'd hold off and head into town for a meal - but it got the job done. I've seen/eaten their non-veg food, and know the potential is there..so come on guys, show us vegans some love so I can come back!!!

For our last stop before heading back to the cabin we decided on Bonobo Winery. Perched up on a hill overlooking the bay, Bonobo's back porch is the perfect place to take in the sunset over a glass of wine - which is exactly what we did!

Sunday morning we had another breakfast at home, this time it was hash browns with veggies, and avocado toast. We were up and fed early, as we had and appointment to go horseback riding at 11, about 45 minutes from the cabin.

We arrived at Outrider Horseback Riding ready to hit the trails! We were met by Doug, the very colorful and entertain owner of Outride, and our tour guide for the afternoon. Doug has very clearly dedicated his life to horses and sharing that love with others. His animals were all very clearly well cared for, and well loved (which is clearly of high importance to me!). As soon as we were matched up with our horses (love you, Copper!!!) we headed out into the trails on the vast property that Doug's barn sits on. The scenery couldn't have been more idyllic or tranquil. We had scheduled an hour long ride, but next time I would definitely go for longer.

Before heading downstate, we grabbed lunch at The Stone Oven in Lake Ann, just a few minutes drive from Outrider. They do have a few vegetarian items on the menu, but nothing strictly vegan. Our waitress however, was very friendly and accomodating - so veganizing my meal wasn't an issue. I opted for a veggie pizza and side salad - it was perfectly tasty and really hit the spot! Next door to the Stone Oven is the Corner Cone ice cream shop. Surprisingly they did actually have two vegan options! Granted, they were store bought So Delicious bars, I was still happy to see they were acknowledging us dairy free folks, so I purchased the Salted Caramel bar. I've gotta say, it really was So Delicious!

With heavy hearts we cleaned up the cabin, packed up the Bug pup and headed south! The weekend really flew by, and I'm left with lots more veg-friendly places to check out. Hey, I guess that just means we'll HAVE to plan another trip!

Until next time, xx K

  1. Thanks for the shout-out.

We love our dairy-free/organic/Kosher/Vegan friends who come by and get the dairy-free bars. We recently added hot-dogs to the menu and will offer a vegan version of those, as well, if we sell enough.

    Come see us again soon.
