EASY SWAPS FOR TRANSITIONING TO A VEGAN DIET (OR FOR THE VEG-CURIOUS)

Changing your diet can feel overwhelming, especially when transitioning from the SAD (standard American diet) to a plant based diet. Even when you have the best motivation (your health, the lives of innocent animals, our precious planet etc.) and intentions - sometimes it can be really easy back to fall back to our old ways. We've all been there, myself included! I wanted to share some easy and accessible tips to help anyone transitioning to a plant based diet, reducing their intake of animal products, or even those of us  just trying to eat a little healthier!

These products can be great to swap out for old favorites, to create quick, healthy, and nutrient dense meals and snacks! I've broken it down by meal to illustrate how we can make healthy changes/additions all day!

DINNER AT PARC DETROIT - PLANT BASED OPTIONS

Last winter my mom and I started the tradition of having a 'Christmas Dinner' at Parc, in Campus Martius. It really is an especially magical experience during the holidays. Request a table at the window, so you can admire the Christmas tree and ice skaters while you eat.

This year before our reservation, I was sure to check the menu for options, as I wasn't able to find much info by way of yelp or tripadvisor. I thought I'd share what I had, as well as other options available!

EASY IMMUNITY BOOSTERS

This time of year it seems nearly impossible to keep the a cold or the flu from rearing it's their ugly heads, in one form or another. We can certainly do our best however, to keep the bugs at bay and keep our immunity in tip top shape.

Over the years I've acquired an arsenal of natural tricks and remedies to fight off whatever winter might have in store, no flu shot necessary! Below are some of my favorite (and easiest) answers to preventing and eliminating sickness during cold and flu season.

VEGAN KALE CAESAR SALAD RECIPE

I recently posted a photo of this salad on my Instagram, and it got such a strong response I decided to write out the recipe for y'all!

This Caesar dressing is super easy to make, and it's great to have on hand for different salads/recipes during the week (Caesar wraps anyone?!).

I generally make this salad with Kale, because I have a sick obsession with it, but it's also great with the more traditional lettuce choice of romaine. I've also subbed cubed tofu for bread croutons to add protein, but toasted bread would make this a super indulgent, crowd pleaser!

The carmelized onions were a 'happen to have on hand' addition, but they add such a delicious sweet/savory element to the salad. No love lost if you don't have the time or desire to include them though.

DIY HOLIDAY GIFT - VEGAN HOT COCOA MIX

This Christmas I decided spread the holiday cheer AND vegan love to my team at work by making them these DIY Hot Cocoa Mixes. Buying for a group can be challenging, but who doesn't love turning on the fireplace and cuddling up with a nice big mug of cocoa, while the snow falls outside? Sign me up! Making the cocoa vegan and sneaking in some extra-healthy ingredients just adds to the loving vibe! Best of all, this mix is super easy to make and assemble - trust me, I am NOT crafty. So channel your inner Martha, and deck those halls!

BYE BYE CANADA GOOSE - HELLO WULLY OUTERWEAR!

Every since adopting a plant based diet just over a year ago, I've also been trying to make shifts in my lifestyle that also align with my decision not to eat animals/use them as a commodity. A large part of that has been not only what I choose to put in my body, but also on it. The unfortunate reality is that the vast majority of cosmetic, clothing and accessories companies still use animal products and animal testing.

I try to be realistic about this process, in that it is definitely just that, a process. It simply isn't realistic to replace everything I've purchased over the past 28 years, all in one day - or even one year!  What has felt right for me is to do my best to make all new purchases animal friendly, take great care of the items that I already own (as to make them last), and replace the items that feel most compelling to me.

One item that was on the top of my "Must Replace List", was my Canada Goose parka. Before coming to understand the gruesome truth about Canada Goose coats (hello live plucking and trapping), I had owned my Canada Goose for about 5 years, and to be honest, it was amazing (performance wise)! We experience very long, cold winters here in Michigan, and a Canada Goose will keep you warm for certain, but at what cost? I knew there had to be a better alternative out there, one that could mean not jeopardizing my ethics for warmth.

QUICK KALE & WHITE BEAN SOUP (VEGAN/GF/OIL FREE).

This soup is so simple, easy to prepare and delicious - I find myself making it often. It's so quick that you can make and serve it the same evening, but it's even better the next day (isn't everything?).

DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS + PIE-SCI PIZZA.

Love, love, love my Angela Roi Madeline Bucket Bag -
full outfit details below

Sunday evening, a friend and I grabbed drinks at Kresge Court in the Detroit Institute of Arts. Because the museum is free for local residents, it's a great spot to go, not just for art, but for drinks with a friend or hunkering down with a coffee to do work.

SUPPLEMENTING FOR A PLANT BASED DIET - IS IT NECESSARY?

Being plant based, I know that my diet is full of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and YES, even protein! That being said, due to modern farming conditions, environmental toxins, and just for added "insurance", I do have some supplements that I add to my daily routine. While these supplements are tailored to suit my vegan lifestyle, they would be beneficial for ANY person trying to improve their health!

QUEEN BROOKE'S KALE SALAD

My sweet, sweet friend Brooke recently had me over for dinner and made this to die for kale salad. The next day I was still dreaming of it, so I asked her for the recipe not only so I could eat it forever, but also that I could share with you guys!

Not only is Brooke herself a QUEEN (not to mention the best mama I know), but the salad itself looks like it's covered in jewels - so I thought the name was appropriate!

Perhaps the very best part of this recipe is that it is made from all Trader Joe's ingredients! Hello easy weeknight dinner. I hope you love this as much as I did! Thanks Brooke!

A PLANT BASED PUP - IS IT PAWSIBLE?

When I became vegan just over a year ago, I began to consider my own dog's diet and how it directly conflicted with my personal beliefs. I refused to consume any animal products myself, yet I was buying directly into factory farming with every purchase I made at the pet store (and with a 70lb German Shepherd that's A LOT of purchases). I began to do some research to see if other people were sharing in my struggle, and if I could in fact safely put Bug on a plant based diet.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2017.

As the holidays seem to be approaching at the speed of light, I thought I'd put together a list gift ideas that can be purchased locally (most can be ordered online as well). Maybe this will help avoid some of that last minute gift buying panic, or is that just me?! Bonus, nearly all of these gifts ring in at under $50.

GREENSPACE CAFE 2ND ANNIVERSARY DINNER.

If you are plant based and live in the Detroit area there is no way you haven't at least heard of Greenspace Cafe. Opened by Dr. Joel Kahn and his son Daniel, Greenspace is a completely vegan restaurant in Ferndale. The beauty of Greenspace is that it's not your 'typical' (or the typical idea of what) a vegan restaurant looks like. It's a beautiful, modern space, that offers an upscale dining experience (and cocktails!) to the plant based and plant curious community.

If you've not yet been to Greenspace, I'd highly recommend visiting. It's a great place for a special occasion (I had my birthday there this year, and took my mom for Mother's Day), or a casual sunday brunch with friends.

To ring in their second birthday, Greenspace hosted a 7 course dinner, with live music by the Sean Blackman Quartet and drink pairings. Luckily I grabbed tickets before it sold out, and was able to partake in the celebration! I wanted to share some snaps of the fabulous food for those who couldn't make it, and perhaps inspire you to plan your own visit!

COCONUT CACAO TRUFFLES.

These truffle balls are addictively delicious. Luckily they're made with raw cacao powder, coconut oil and natural sweeteners that are packed with antioxidants, healthy fats and minerals! I brought these into the office and was left with an empty tupperware container within about 10 minutes.

Come on in for the recipe!
